Daryl JONES, 6e Dan, Shihan
Athabasca, Alberta, Canada
Shihan Jones practices Shorinjiryu Kentokukan Karatedo, and has been studying and training in Shorinjiryu Karate for 36 years. His other martial arts interests and research subjects include Okinawan Kobudo, Japanese sword arts, judo, aikido, and other grappling arts systems. Eastern philosophy as it pertains to martial arts systems has also been part of his studies.
Daryl Jones started training in Shorinjiryu Kenkokan Karatedo in 1989 in Athabasca Alberta under Ellen Caouette, a shodan of the Bushidokan in St Albert Alberta. He then joined the Bushidokan Dojo under Kyoshi (7th dan) Philip Watland later that year. When Shorinjiryu Kentokukan came into being in January of 1994, Shihan Jones affiliated with that branch of Shorinjiryu and has continued to follow Shinan (9th dan) Wayne Donivan’s system ever since. Shihan Jones tested for Shodan in December of 1994.
In May of 1995, a dojo in Athabasca Alberta was formally recognized (Wa-no Kaze Kai) with Kyoshi Cindy Jones (7th dan) named as dojo Sensei, and Shihan Jones the (second in rank) senior instructor under her lead. Shihan Jones was promoted to the rank of 6th (Rokudan) dan in the Kentokukan School of Karatedo in 2025. He continues to teach and train in the Wa-no Kaze Kai dojo as well as attending as many events with the Kentokukan dojos and other Shorinjiryu affiliates in Eastern Canada as distances and travel/time will allow.
Along with Kyoshi Cindy Jones, Shihan Jones has trained and coached Alberta students for several Provincial, National and International events in the 30 year history of the dojo in both shiai and kata competitions; including a trip to compete in the International Hard Contact Tournament in Yanagawa Japan in 1998. As well, he has assisted in training numerous Wa-no Kaze Kai students in both junior and adult classes to black belt rankings from Junior Shodan to adult Yondan.
