Peter Hiltz

Peter Hiltz began training in 1976 under the guidance of Nelson Knode and William (Bill) Penwell Nusz in the Nihon Takaiyama Karatedo group. He later studied with Emory Knode, Cyrilla, and Al Hergenhan, who were also students of Knode and Nusz. Nelson Knode had studied under Minoru Morita, a student of Kori Hisataka, while Bill Nusz had studied with Shunji Watanabe, one of the three students sent by Kori Hisataka to the United States to spread Shorinjiryu Kenkokan Karatedo.

Peter participated in the Nihon Takaiyama tournaments, winning numerous trophies in kata, kumite, and shiai (sparring) competitions. After entering university, he continued to train during the summers and progressed quickly, moving directly from 2nd Greenbelt to 1st Brown. He also studied Judo at university. After obtaining his Shodan, he earned the rank of Nidan a few years later.

In 1995, Peter founded Morning Star Martial Arts, which remains the only Shorinjiryu dojo in the Eldersburg and Sykesville areas of Maryland. In the 1990s, he began studying Tomiki Aikido with Sensei Brian Sutherland and earned his Shodan in that discipline. He also briefly studied with Shunji Watanabe until a knee injury interrupted his practice.

Peter currently holds a 6th Dan, with the title of Renshi, in Shorinjiryu Karatedo from the Shorinjiryu Shinzen Kyokai. He teaches regularly three days a week and organizes self-defense seminars.
